Why Choose Mexico for Your Destination Wedding?

Why Choose Mexico for Your Destination Wedding?

Picture this: warm sunshine, turquoise water, palm trees swaying in the breeze, and the people you love most gathered together to celebrate one of the biggest moments of your life. It’s easy to understand why Mexico continues to be one of the most popular choices for destination weddings — especially for couples travelling from Canada. But beautiful beaches are only part of the story. Mexico offers an incredible variety of resorts, wedding venues and experiences, making it possible to create a celebration that truly feels like you.

It’s easy to understand why Mexico continues to be one of the most popular choices for destination weddings especially for couples travelling from Canada.

But beautiful beaches are only part of the story. Mexico offers an incredible variety of resorts, wedding venues and experiences, making it possible to create a celebration that truly feels like you.

So Many Destinations to Choose From

One of the things I love about Mexico for destination weddings is that no two areas are quite the same.

Cancun & Costa Mujeres
Perfect for couples who want beautiful beaches, modern resorts and relatively easy access from Cancun International Airport. Costa Mujeres has become especially popular for destination weddings, with several newer resorts and gorgeous wedding venues.

Playa Mujeres
A wonderful option if you're looking for something a little more upscale while still being close to Cancun. You'll find beautiful beachfront resorts and some excellent adults-only and family-friendly choices.

Riviera Maya
Stretching south from Cancun toward Tulum, the Riviera Maya gives couples an enormous selection of resorts. Whether you're dreaming of a large celebration, an intimate wedding or something surrounded by tropical gardens rather than directly on the beach, there are plenty of possibilities.

Playa del Carmen
Ideal for couples who want their guests to have more to experience beyond the resort. Playa del Carmen combines beautiful resorts with restaurants, shopping, nightlife and the atmosphere of Fifth Avenue.

Los Cabos
Looking for something completely different? Cabo offers dramatic desert landscapes, mountains and the Pacific Ocean. It's sophisticated, romantic and absolutely stunning in photographs.

Resorts for Almost Every Wedding Style

This is where Mexico really shines.

You can choose an adults-only luxury resort, a family-friendly property where everyone from toddlers to grandparents feels welcome, a smaller boutique-style resort, or a sprawling property filled with restaurants, pools and activities.

There are also resorts that allow adults to stay in an adults-only section while still giving them access to the family-friendly areas — something that can work beautifully for wedding groups.

And your ceremony doesn't necessarily have to be on the beach.

Depending on the resort, wedding venues can include:

  • Oceanfront terraces and gazebos
  • Rooftop venues
  • Tropical gardens
  • Private courtyards
  • Sky terraces
  • Overwater-style platforms
  • Beach locations
  • Private reception spaces

If you've always pictured a destination wedding but not necessarily your feet in the sand, Mexico gives you plenty of alternatives.

Great Accessibility from Canada

For Canadian couples, accessibility is a major consideration when choosing a destination.

Mexico is well served by flights from Canada, particularly during the winter season, and destinations such as Cancun and Los Cabos are familiar vacation gateways for Canadian travellers.

That can make attending your wedding much easier for your guests than choosing a destination requiring complicated connections or lengthy transfers.

When you're potentially coordinating travel for 30, 50, 75 or even 100+ people, those logistics matter.

Your Wedding Becomes a Vacation Together

One of the best things about a destination wedding is that it isn't just one day.

Your guests may arrive several days before the wedding, giving everyone time to relax, reconnect and actually spend time together.

Imagine welcome cocktails one evening, a pool or beach day the next, perhaps a group excursion, the wedding itself and then a relaxed breakfast together the following morning.

Instead of trying to speak to 100 guests during a five-hour reception at home, you've created several days of memories together.

That's one of the reasons I love destination weddings so much.

Options for Different Budgets

Mexico offers an enormous range of resort styles and price points.

That doesn't mean every Mexican destination wedding is inexpensive, far from it. Luxury resorts, premium wedding packages and private events can add up quickly.

What Mexico does offer is choice.

We can look at the overall picture: the cost for the couple, what guests will pay for their vacation packages, wedding package inclusions, private-event costs, room categories, group benefits and potential extras.

Finding the right resort isn't simply about finding the lowest room rate.

It's about finding the resort that offers the best overall fit and value for your particular wedding.

Incredible Backdrops for Your Wedding Photos

Mexico gives photographers plenty to work with.

Think turquoise Caribbean water and white-sand beaches on one coast, dramatic rock formations and desert landscapes on the other, along with lush gardens, colourful architecture, cenotes and beautiful resort spaces.

Your wedding photographs become part of the experience and Mexico provides some pretty spectacular scenery.

Your Guests Have Plenty to Experience

For guests who want to turn your wedding into a longer vacation, Mexico has so much to offer.

Depending on the destination, they can explore cenotes, snorkel, visit Mayan archaeological sites, enjoy catamaran trips, play golf, experience local food and culture, go shopping or simply stay at the resort and enjoy the beach.

Guests can make the trip as relaxed or adventurous as they want.

The Right Resort Makes All the Difference

Here's something I tell couples regularly:

There isn't one "best" destination wedding resort in Mexico.

There's only the resort that's best for you.

A resort that is perfect for an adults-only wedding of 30 guests may be completely wrong for a wedding with 75 guests that includes young children.

Before recommending resorts, I want to understand things such as your guest list, approximate budget, preferred atmosphere, wedding vision, ceremony and reception preferences, accessibility needs and what's most important to you as a couple.

That's where working with a travel advisor who specializes in destination weddings becomes valuable.

Why Work With a Destination Wedding Travel Specialist?

Planning your wedding is exciting. Coordinating the travel arrangements for dozens of people can be considerably less exciting!

As a destination wedding travel specialist, my role goes far beyond booking a resort.

I help my couples narrow down destinations and resorts, review group options, understand the travel side of the wedding, coordinate guest bookings and payments, communicate important deadlines and travel information, and work alongside the resort wedding team or your wedding planner.

Most importantly, your guests have someone to contact with their travel questions instead of coming to you.

Because you should be planning your wedding, not answering messages about someone's flight, room category or airport transfer at 10:00 at night.

Is Mexico Right for Your Destination Wedding?

If you're dreaming about a destination wedding in 2027, 2028 or beyond, Mexico deserves a place on your shortlist.

The combination of beautiful resorts, diverse wedding venues, accessibility from Canada, stunning scenery and options for different budgets makes it one of the most versatile destination wedding locations available.

And you don't need to know exactly where you want to get married before reaching out.

That's what I'm here for.

At Barefoot Travel, I've helped plan more than 150 destination weddings, and I know how overwhelming that first stage can feel when you're staring at dozens of resorts that all look beautiful online.

We'll talk about your vision, your guests and what's important to you, then start narrowing down the possibilities together.

Your destination wedding starts with finding the right destination and I'll be with you every step of the way.
